Rating (5 being the best): 4
This is a fantastic little book that covers well over 250 dog breeds that are found in several different countries. It has one of the best summaries on dog origins, the domesticated dog (anatomy, in relation to the wolf, etc), care and training. Plus it features a section that I've never seen before in my other books that discusses "street dogs," which is a fascinating "culture" all on it's own. Each breed is summarized by discussing the size, grooming (how much is require), trainability, colors and a short summary on the purpose of the dog, origin and temperament.
The breeds are not categorized the traditional way (herding, hounds...etc) like I've seen in most other books. Instead the catagories are by size - there are four main categories: small (under 22lb), medium (22-44lb), large 44-88lb) and extra large (88lb plus). However within each size category the dogs are then placed within their respective groups (herding, working, fighting...etc) although it doesn't define them. The pictures are clear and show the dog and its individual characteristics well.

This is an awesome little excerp on dog behavior in comparison to wolf behavior. Scientist studied the presence of 15 signals that wolves use to convey threat or submission, focussing on 10 different breeds. The Siberian Husky rated 15/15 (meaning all signals were present) and the lowest being the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with 2/15.

This was my very first dog book ever so I am very fond of it. The pictures are wonderful and it shows points that are particularly important to each breed (things like "small round feet," or "wide skull and fox like head"). It is a great book for a quick reference so if you don't feel like reading through a paragraph to see what type of temperament the dog has, instead you just look at the little chart that each breed has. The chart entails the country of origin, first use, origins (date), height, weight, and temperament. Another nice feature is is actually shows pictures of the other coat colors and combinations. Each breed discription also has a helpful picture of the dog in relation to a 6' man - which is very nice for those who have a difficult time visualizing what 12" at the withers looks like. In the beginning it discusses origins, care, showing and gives a good summary of the groups - Gundogs (sporting), Working, Herding, Hounds, Terriers. This is also how the breeds are catagorized. It discusses a basic introduction on dog behavior, breeding, raising puppies, and much more - all with lots of pictures.

This is a very easy to use book. It's great if you have a breed in mind and want to be able to look it up quickly (the breeds are categorized alphabetically). The book covers 300 breeds that are recognized by the FCI (Federation of Cynologique Internationale). It has a detailed section about the different dog groupings, there are 10 of them. I really like the layout of the breed summaries - it's very easy to use and even includes genetic issues found in each breed. This book however doesn't have a lot of general information like origins or anatomy, although it does have a section on choosing a dog.

I'd buy this book on the information alone. It has such an extensive collection of canince history, behavior and care. It discusses the first dog shows, dogs in art, dogs in the human world, and a wonderful source of anatomy that actually not only shows an over view, but discusses specifics all with pictures. The only reason why I didn't give this book a full 5 rating was because of the pictures. Some are great, but some are of bad quality or make the dogs full body shape difficult to see.

Perhaps the best ecyclopedia out there! The pictures are perfect - no distracting back grounds, several different angles and very clear. This book also has a fantastic introduction with lots of history, dog care, and other various information. Its categories are primitive dogs, sight hounds, spitz-type dogs, scenthounds, gundogs, terriers, livestock, companion dogs and a section for random-bred dogs that include dogs likecocerkpoos, bull boxers, labradoodles, etc. There are over 420 breeds discussed in this book! My only complaint - it's so big!
